Summer holiday childcare in London usually needs a different plan from term-time childcare because the school day disappears while parents’ working hours do not. Families can combine annual leave, holiday clubs, family help and temporary nanny cover, but the right mix depends on the actual dates, children’s ages, working pattern and whether care is needed at home or in a group setting.
School holiday dates vary by local authority and school, so confirm your child’s dates before booking. GOV.UK provides a school term and holiday-date finder that routes families to their local council.
What our temporary-childcare enquiries show
Filipino Nanny’s current client-enquiry dataset contains 203 submissions from 13 April 2025 to 20 August 2026. Within that dataset, 22 enquiries selected at least one Temporary/Holiday Nanny or Temporary/Holiday Nanny-Housekeeper option.
Eight of those temporary/holiday enquiries arrived in July or August 2025. In the available 2026 period, three arrived across June to August, with the dataset ending on 20 August. These counts are not completed placements, do not measure the whole London childcare market and should not be read as proof that one month is always busier than another.
The practical point is narrower: families do arrive with defined short-term childcare gaps, and those gaps are easier to assess when the dates, hours, location and duties are supplied from the beginning.
Method: distinct WPForms client-enquiry entries where the multi-select role field included Temporary/Holiday Nanny or Temporary/Holiday Nanny-Housekeeper. One enquiry can also contain another role selection. Dataset: 13 April 2025 to 20 August 2026.
Which summer childcare options should you compare?
| Option | Where care happens | Schedule model | Best question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary nanny | Usually the family’s home or another agreed location | Agreed dates and working hours | Do we need care built around our own timetable and children? |
| Holiday club | At the club or activity setting | Provider sessions and opening times | Do the sessions cover the actual working day and travel time? |
| Family or informal help | Varies | Agreed privately | Is the arrangement reliable for every date we need? |
| Annual leave / split-parent cover | Family care | Built around parents’ leave | How much of the holiday can we realistically cover ourselves? |
A temporary nanny is not automatically the best or lowest-cost option. It becomes more relevant where the family needs in-home care, a schedule that does not align with holiday-club sessions, care for siblings on different routines, or a defined period away from normal childcare.
When might a temporary nanny fit the summer gap?
Temporary nanny cover may suit families who need childcare on specific working days, need the children cared for in their own home, or have a holiday period that does not fit another provider’s sessions.
Before asking the agency to search, define:
- the exact dates;
- normal start and finish times;
- the children’s ages;
- whether the nanny is caring for all children at the same time;
- meals, activities, outings or school-holiday routines that are part of the day;
- whether driving or public transport is required;
- whether the role is at home, at another London location or involves family travel;
- any wider household duties, which may make a nanny-housekeeper brief more accurate.

How early should you plan summer childcare?
There is no universal booking lead time that Filipino Nanny can guarantee. Candidate availability changes with the dates, location, hours and role. The useful rule is to start once your dates and working pattern are known rather than relying on a fixed “book X weeks ahead” claim.
If your school’s exact holiday dates are not confirmed, use the council or school timetable first. GOV.UK notes that term and holiday dates vary across the UK and provides the local term-date lookup.
Can childcare support schemes affect the comparison?
Potentially. GOV.UK says Tax-Free Childcare can be used with approved childcare providers including a registered nanny, registered childminder, nursery, playscheme or club. That does not mean every nanny or every temporary booking automatically qualifies: the provider must meet the scheme’s approval requirements and the family must also be eligible.
See GOV.UK: approved childcare and help with childcare costs and Tax-Free Childcare eligibility.
Free Childcare for Working Parents is a different scheme. GOV.UK’s approved-provider list for those funded hours does not include nannies, so do not assume the same support applies to a nanny and a nursery or holiday club.
What if you need a nanny while travelling?
Travel changes the brief. Agree the destination, travel dates, working hours, off-duty time, accommodation, transport, expenses, insurance and childcare duties before confirming a candidate. Any immigration or work-permission requirements for the destination must be checked for the individual nanny.
Do not treat a holiday nanny as automatically available internationally. The destination and candidate both matter.
What if the summer role includes housekeeping?
If the family genuinely needs wider household duties as well as childcare, define a nanny-housekeeper role rather than adding cleaning informally after the booking begins. The combined workload still needs to fit within the agreed hours.
Use our nanny-housekeeper duties guide to separate child-related responsibilities from wider household work.
How should you write the summer brief?
- Confirm every date that genuinely needs cover.
- Write the normal working hours for each day.
- List the children and ages.
- Describe the care setting: home, outings, venue or travel.
- List recurring childcare duties.
- Separate wider household duties if any.
- State travel, driving, late-finish or overnight expectations.
- Confirm the location and preferred start point for the day.
The same discipline applies to permanent roles. Our nanny job-description template can help you structure the information.
What should families do next?
If you are still comparing care models, start with childcare options for working parents in London. If you know you need temporary in-home cover, send the dates, hours, postcode and duties through the client enquiry form.
Key takeaway
Summer childcare planning works best when the family starts with the real gap rather than the provider label. Confirm the school dates, working hours and children’s routines first, then compare holiday clubs, family cover and temporary nanny options against the same timetable.
